Hey! I noticed that you mentioned on one of your drawings that it was a student. Can I ask where you teach?

Ah okay. Some of the figures looked like some of the students that come model at BYU-I, so I was curious. :D

I received my degree from BYU-I.  Some of my paintings are from BYU-I students.

I'm working on a semi portrait of a couple.  I found the photo in an antique shop around here.  It was taken in the 40s at a local amusement park.  The guy looks handsome and rather dis-interested and the girl looks innocent and excited.  It's a toughy ... lots of expression and also reflections of things in the table.  Plus it's black and white so I'm imagining the colors.  I royally messed it up today and went to route of watercolor ground over the woman's face.  This is where I'm having the difficulty.  I just can't get the faces the way I want them ... Hence my comment about studying your work.  Skin tones and expressions are very challenging to me.  Portraits in generally are a bit tough ...   I don't know if there's a way to post WIPs that are not publicly available.  I know this description isn't exactly painting the picture ...

So, as an excersise I grabbed a stock photo from here and put the other piece aside.  Spent the afternoon trying something new ... hopefully it turned out okay.

Sounds tricky.  Lots of exercises and practice will help a ton. Also if you can do some painting from life to get used to the colors, that will help you invent colors better when working from photos (especially bw photos).  Good luck!
